Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology
(A National Institute with International Repute)
Introduction
Indian Institute of Crop Processing Technology (IICPT) formely known as Paddy Processing Research Centre (PPRC), Thanjavur is an autonomous organization under the administrative control of MFPI. It has been in existence for the last three decades. As other commodities such as millets, pulses and oil seeds are gaining importance, it was decided in 2001 to expand the mandate of this Institute to include the above commodities also. In the Budget Speech of 2006-07, the Hon'ble Union Finance Minister announced the intention of the Government to upgrade PPRC to a National Institute. The institute is being upgraded to a national level institute at a cost of Rs 88.49 crores.
     
Research Focuses
  •    IICPT focuses research in major theme areas to address problems like: machine vision system, Soft X- ray image processing, acoustic determination of fruits and vegetables maturity for harvesting, application of soft X-rays for identifying internal blemishes in fruits and vegetables, development of on-farm pre-coolers and vegetable washers, development of indigenous technology knowledge based food, composite grains foods, energy saving in parboiling, improving milling techniques of cereal grains, pulses, oil seeds and millets, food processing effluent treatment, creating ready to use dry mix fermented batter for idly and other Indian foods, new food product development based on grains, fruits and vegetables, fortification of processed foods for making health foods at affordable prices, development of new equipments for puffing, multipurpose yard drying, parboiling, for producing hand pound rice, reducing storage losses, economic utilization of biomass, food industries by-product and waste utilization.
  •    IICPT also encourages collaborative research with other National Laboratories and Agricultural Universities, and Public Private Partnership researches and contact researches.
     
Food Processing Incubation Center
  •    IICPT has created a hi-tech, state of the art food processing incubation-cum-training centre with sales outlet as Food Processing Incubation Model in its campus offers short and long term hands-on training to rural youth, women self help groups, producers, students, new and experienced entrepreneurs and other stake holders and technical consultancy services for the establishment of food industries.
  •    The facilities including the equipments and machinery are given on rental basis to stake holders who wish to produce and market test their produce before venturing in the food processing businesses.
     
Academic Programs
  •    The Institute began offering formal degree courses at bachelors, masters and doctoral levels in food process engineering from 2009-10 academic year.
  •    In B. Tech program 40 students are admitted every year, 10 students in the M. Tech program and 5 in the Ph. D program.
  •    IICPT sends undergraduate students for short term exposure and graduate students for long term research training works in reputed international institutions in advanced laboratories around the world.
  •    These training and research exposures help to create leaders in food processing who can take Indian food processing sector to greater heights.
     
MoUs with National and International Institutions
  •    In the last 3+ years IICPT has become truly international. The Institute has signed MoUs with 12 National and 10 International Institutions so far.
       The International Institutions with whom IICPT has already entered into MoU include:

Outreach Activities
  •    IICPT has conducted numerous outreach activities across the country at many places.
  •    In the last 3+ years IICPT organized 25 National seminars and workshops, 3 International seminars/conferences and workshops, 25 Food Processing Expos, 276 Training Programs, 300+ outreach activities conducted by IICPT for NIFTEM & NMPPB across the country.
     
Consultancy for laboratories
  •    IICPT also does consultation works for other organizations or individuals for creating laboratories related to food processing or food testing. Following are some laboratories IICPT has created as a consultant for different organizations:

    1. A Meat and Meat Products Testing Laboratory was created for National Meat & Poultry Processing Board (NMPPB), Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India, in New Delhi during 2010-2011.
    2. A hitech Food Microbiology Laboratory was created for HI-RISE FOOD TECH LAB, Unit No 3, Golden Jubilee Biotech Park for Women Society, Siruseri Village, Inside SIPCOT- IT Park, Old Mahabalipuram Road, Navalur Post, Kanchipuram District-603 103 during 2010-2011 at the project cost of Rs.16.91Lakhs.
    3. IICPT has created 14 teaching laboratories for NIFTEM at Kundli, Haryana.
